Teaching: Reigate Sixth Form College, Surrey

1997-1999
Whilst working as the Head of Photography I was responsible for devising the two year Advanced level Photography course (Edexcel) and the one year GCSE Photography course (Edexcel) and also teaching on the GNVQ Foundation Art and Design course and Advanced level Art (Edexcel).

Project: Reflections & Refractions

Students enjoyed exploring a reflections and refraction theme. Using mirrors, mirrored surfaces, water, oil, glass, and glass objects they explored abstract imagery. The theme provided a great opportunity to explore ways of presenting the work often making use of the materials featured within the projects.

Project: Joiners

Students enjoyed exploring ways of capturing time and movement by taking a series of photographs. Many students made large scale works using 10"x8" prints.

Project: Natural Forms

This project provided a diverse range of subject matter. Many students explored how to photograph a mundane object in new and exciting ways. Students explored scanning and digital manipulation techniques as well as traditional photographic techniques like toning and dyeing, liquid light, cliche verre, photograms and pinhole imagery.

Project: Photo-Story, Sequences and Cartoon

The groups experimented with ways of telling a story through photography. Students also explored image and text and produced a range of themes e.g. Barbie Subverted, a fashion magazine 4 page spread, a photo-story and a flick book of lego men opening and cooking beans!

Project: Myths, Legends and Fables

Mythical stories provided a great starting point for students to imagine fantastical imagery and then consider ways of constructing them. Some students produced stage sets and photographed sequences of imagery other students took models, objects and text out into the landscape to tell a bizarre story.

Preparatory work:

Great emphasis was placed on making creative preparatory work which documented the development of each theme students worked upon. The prep work presented initial brainstorming, concept development, experimentation, ideas for presentation and technical information learnt and problem solving. Students were encouraged to consider creative and alternative ways of presenting prep work e.g. using mixed media as well as conventional sketchbooks.
