The
Tait Gallery
This work was inspired
by the art history courses I had studied as part of various art
courses. The lectures I received tackled a different movement in
modern art history, and in each lecture one 'famous' painter was
chosen and used as an example - the chosen painter was invariably
the one most popularly associated with that particular movement,
and his work would be analysed in detail to emphasise the stylistic
devices which epitomise the movement, or 'ism'.
I found this approach
to the study of art history very narrow-minded. It seemed that no
attempt had been made to address other influences such as social
history, political background, alternative and minority tendencies
at the time, which all played their part in the development of each
school.
I decided to 'parody'
the individual painters and often individual works which were chosen
as the 'trade marks' of each 'ism'. I recreated these works in an
attic room which resembled an artist's garret, and used all the
available surfaces to produce a two dimensional image, or the illusion
of a two dimensional image, by photographing the three dimensional
reconstruction.

Miro-Pollock
This project worked against 'The Tait Gallery' and its presentation
of one image one art movement. The Miro-Pollock sequence brought
together two artists from different periods and with two different
philosophies and ways of working. Pollock was greatly influenced
by the work of Miro and in 'traditional' art history this might
not be highlighted. This concertina book brought these artists work,
literally, together.

Constructed Images
This sequence of images set out to explore the stages of construction
and development of a photographic project. Over the series of images
the camera pulled further and further back to reveal more of the
stage, technical aids, photographic equipment and the photographer
and director herself.
The final series of cyanotype images were presented as a handmade
book.

The Shed
The Shed
provided a fascinating space to explore as it contained artifacts
that provided an image of the previous owners. It produced memories
and recollections of childhood and of other worlds. The mirror became
a central feature of projecting these other worlds and also of the
bizarre world of The Shed itself.

Acid Rain
Explored ways of presenting the effects acid rain was having
on forests. Using gum bichromate different colours were used to
show the shift from a healthy 'green' forest towards an acid red
with very little remaining.
This project was a two part project, the second section explored
the impact of acid rain on water.
The work was originally presented as two complementary handmade
books.

High Tor, Matlock
Bath
High Tor is a location which provides a contrast of extreme
beauty and mans intervention. This project explored this dicotomy
placing two images side by side one of natural forms e.g. rock formations
and trees and then the constructs in the environment to ensure the
visitor enjoyed their visit.

Quarry, High Peak
Trail, nr Cromford
Quarries provide dramatic imagery of environmental impact. I find
quarries extremely discomforting places to be in as someone who has
a passion for the natural landscape. Yet as a photographer I find
the shapes, textures and patterns visually stimulating.

Miniature Houses
Looking down from High Tor, Matlock Bath, a small group of houses
are a dominant feature of the landscape. Yet from these heights they
seem unreal and at times feel like you could touch them.
