Thomas Joshua Cooper
Born 1946 (San Francisco(USA))

Work:
Cooper is preoccupied by using the landscape to portray a passing of time and a narrative. He states that "gazing is my primary physical activity. Stillness and silence surround and submerge event. Nothing happens, nothing ever seems to happen. Anticipation builds and extends."..."I work on the periphery of populated and cultivated land-spaces. I work in familiar and ordinary places, easily accessible, and often overlooked. I am irresistibly drawn towards, quiet, towards the far edges of a place."
For Cooper the landscape is a space which is filled with emotion and gesture and for both the photographer and viewer a space of anticipation and memory.

Themes:
Ephemera (changing moods and emotions of landscape)
Ephemera (time and its effect on the landscape, exploring weather conditions, tides, times of day, etc.)
Intensity of nature (extreme key tones to represent mood/sensation)
Time in the environment/movement (using short shutter speeds to capture moment)
Natural Forms (details of nature, looking in closely and traveling into the original image)
Importance of place (specific regions are clearly stated in his work)
Seascapes (as areas, locations with identity and feelings)
